Your Midi-Drums On Steroids!
Why Deviant ONE?
Single-hit samples, sometimes referred to as one-shots, are certainly an effective strategy in creating a more solid, stand-out, powerful performance, but there are a handful of questions on the best way to go about implementing them into your music production.
Should we audio trigger them? Should we drag audio files onto the session grid? Should we use Battery? Heck, what if I don't have Battery?! Could I load them into some other sampler that I'm partially familiar with, and if I do that, what kind of effect parameters do I have available?
Every one of those workflows is garbage! Depending on your level of expertise, it's kind of easy to just get by on something that sort of works, or maybe your eyes glossed over when we started asking how to implement "One-Shots". Maybe you don't even know what one-shots are. It's ok we're here for you...
Speaking from my own experience, before creating Deviant ONE, the BEST way to stack samples in my mixes, was not totally clear.
There needed to be a cheap, easily accessible, flexible solution, that everyone could benefit from, whether you already have something like Battery, or Trigger, or some other option, and that option needed to be useful whether you're a novice producer or a veteran.
So the question became:
What if we made a comprehensive instrument, that could stand up as a drum instrument in its own right? Something that's fun, but most importantly, useful? Something simple enough for a beginner to use the basic features from startup, but with enough creative potential that a music production veteran could feel like they finally have an easy go-to!?
Well, true to form, we wanted the perfect plugin that we couldn't really find. So we made it for ourselves, and then we decided to build it out and make it available to everyone else!
Return Of The Deviant Sounds!
We took ALL of the sounds from our flagship instrument, Deviant Drums, re-imagined those samples through multiple hardware and software chains, and made a totally new instrument with the same gigantic amount of built-in sound options!
We are sure that you can find your next great drum tone in here somewhere, but we built so much more freedom into Deviant ONE, just in case you wanted to think outside the box, that the "as-is" internal sounds are barely scratching the surface.
One-Click Modify Your Sound
At the bottom of Deviant ONE, you'll find 6 modifier buttons per channel strip that change the way your drum sounds react to your inputs.
Humanize, filter track, velocity track, distort, reverberate, and octave down your way to a sound that either blends into your music like a chameleon, or go the other way and stand out abrasively. Or go anywhere in between!
These controls are both automatable and key switchable. Pressing any of the buttons loads them into the assigned keyswitch, so that they can be performed with a midi controller, while pressing them still works with daw automation!
Tone Shaping Galore!
The main layout shows a set of 5 controls to help shape and control your tones in the most effective and efficient way possible. Quickly eq, saturate, and transient shape your sound. You can go really far with these controls.
For those of you who want to go deeper, we added an additional ADSR section to expand the tonal possibilities!
Having full control over the attack, hold, decay, sustain, and release parameters on a per-channel basis gives SO much additional flexibility, that it's like the amount of internal drum sounds almost becomes infinite!
We didn't stop there. We still figured we could take
Deviant ONE further...
Much further!
Drag & Drop Freedom
For users who want to explore realms outside of the built-in tonal ecosystem, there are User Zones that allow drag-and-drop action.
This means that if you have sounds that you'd like to experiment with inside of Deviant ONE, then that's encouraged. We wanted to make sure that we gave you the tools to do whatever it takes to get the perfect result!
... and then we took that idea one step further, and we actually made it possible to completely bypass the Deviant Drums sounds on a per-page basis, and customize your tonal landscape with an extra row of user zones. so you can use whatever sounds you like, even if those sounds are not made by Chaos Tones. Absolute creative freedom!
To make blending samples easier, each track also includes a Balance knob that allows you to blend the volume of the top and bottom rows.
There is nothing that will stop your creativity!
Your Perfect Velocity Response
Each channel in Deviant ONE has a TRIG knob that changes the velocity at which your samples are triggered, meaning that if you only want your samples to trigger when you hit the hardest, then turning this knob all the way up will ensure that only the heaviest hits get through.
This is perfect when you just want that extra boost, your hits are already at max capacity, and you don't want to trigger anything dynamic!
This also works well when applying modifier buttons! Setting the TRIG knob above a ghost note threshold and applying velocity tracking means that your blended drums can stay dynamic, while Deviant ONE can do the heavy lifting as your hits get harder.
Something For Everyone
The most important thing from our perspective, was that this was a tool that was easily accessible to everyone. We did lots of extra work to make sure that this instrument works with the oldest version of Kontakt Player that Native Instruments would allow. In other words, no additional purchases needed to be made in order to run Deviant ONE, and the most minimal computer requirements are needed.
It was equally important to us, that even if you are a veteran music producer and have a hard drive full of great plugins and instruments, that this was an instrument that still had fantastic utility.
If all you have are the stock drums that come with your DAW, or if you only play V-drums, and you're looking for a way to get more tonal creativity and power, Deviant ONE is a great solution. If you're a platinum selling music producer that has every plugin and instrument imaginable, then you probably already saw the value, and bought this before you even got to this part of the page.
